Group Swim Lessons
Group swim lessons are available for children ages 3 and up. Lessons will begin in late June and will be from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. All group lessons are handled by the head lifeguard. Please stop by the guard office or guard table to sign up your child for lessons.
Make-up lessons due to bad weather will be held on Thursday from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Lessons are broken into 3 groups based on skill level. Each level will work on different skills with different objectives. The chart below outlines each level:
Experience Level: Swimmers with little to no experience, can swim short distances if at all, cannot float on back.
- Blowing bubbles
- Swimming short distances
- Jumping in
- Kicking with a board
- Floating on the back
Goal: Gain confidence in the pool, be able to swim without a float accompanied by an adult.
Experience Level: Swimmers who can swim short distances on their own (5-10 feet), strokes are not developed, child tires quickly, can float on back and kick with a board.
- Developing strokes, swimming with arms up out of the water
- Lifting the head to breathe while swimming
- Swimming across the shallow end
Goal: Swim alone across the shallow end with the arms out of the water while picking the head up and down to breathe.
Experience Level: Swimmers that can swim longer distances on their own (20-25 feet), some stroke development, can swim on back and float on their own.
- Learning freestyle and backstroke
- Passing the deep water test
- Treading water
Goal: Pass the deep water test, swim the full length of the pool (freestyle and backstroke) tread water for 1 minute, ready to join the swim team.
Swim lesson instructors will conduct evaluations on the first day of the lessons to place children at the appropriate level. Swimmers will move to a new level as their skills develop. There will be one swim instructor for each group of three swimmers to make sure that the swimmers get the most out of each lesson; instructors will be added based on the number of swimmers in each group. The group swim lessons are geared towards swimmers who want to develop their swimming overall. While these lessons are not solely for children who plan on joining the swim team they are a good first step to get your child ready to join the swim team if they so choose.
Private lessons are available to children of all ages and allow swimmers to focus on very specific skills and provide them with more attention and focus than in a group lesson. Private swim lessons will be scheduled directly with the swim instructor. These lessons are best for children who need to work on very specific skills or strokes or prefer more individualized attention to reach their swimming goals.
